Why Do Twitter GIFs Download as MP4?
Because X no longer keeps GIFs as GIFs. When someone uploads an animated GIF, X converts it into a short, silent MP4 video and shows that in a loop. An MP4 is often ten times smaller than the same animation as a GIF and looks better, since a GIF can only hold 256 colours per frame. So a plain download of a twitter gif gives you an MP4 — that is the original file.
